Traditional hardwired Access Control systems require 230v to power the Access Control Unit, in addition to network connections for the software which isn’t always achievable especially in heritage properties. Wireless Access Control solutions may be better suited to protect your property; the wireless Access Control systems offer the same functionality as wired. 

Paxton PaxLock Pro

One such solution is the Paxton PaxLock Pro which is a wireless battery powered door handle with Access Control built in. The PaxLock Pro replaces your existing door furniture and can then be integrated with the Paxton software. The PaxLock Pro can be treated as an entirely “Standalone” system requiring no further network integration or the PaxLock Pro can be connected to an airbridge sited within 15m to connect it to the software for a fully networked solution. 

Paxlock Pros can be installed alongside traditional hardwired Paxton Access Controllers to create a “hybrid” system utilising both hardwired and wireless equipment. The PaxLock Pro uses traditional methods of credentials including fobs and proximity cards. The batteries within the PaxLock doors can ensure operation for around 55,000 operates per battery set and the door provides low battery warnings before failing locked.  

When correctly installed the PaxLock door will operate as a standard door handle on the secure side of the door, thus allowing normal egress from a room by opening the door with the handle, however on the Unsecure side of the door, access is only granted once an authorised token has bene presented.

Heritage and General Application

Wireless Access Control systems are ideal for us in heritage property as they are easily installed onto existing doors without the need for huge amounts of cabling. Typically, wireless Access Control systems also allow for faster installation as there is considerably less time required to install the required components. 

Wireless Access Control doors are also useful for high traffic areas as they are treated as standard handles and can be easily cleaned in sterile areas. 

The Paxton PaxLock Pro is IP55 & IK10 rated meaning it’s resistant to weather, dust and vandalism therefore making it suitable for exterior doors which further supports compatibility with heritage sites.

As with all Access Control doors, the designer should consider BS 7273 and BS 8539 to ensure the system will operate accordingly in the event of a fire activation. A site survey should be conducted prior to any installation to ensure the system is appropriate to the customers’ requirements.
