Access Control is a highly effective solution for securing a premises and controlling entry and egress from a property. The use electromagnetic locking systems and sophisticated control units, the systems can be programmed in a very bespoke manner to meet the customers’ requirements.

Typically, an Access Control system is made up 5 key components comprised of the following:

Access Control Unit (ACU)
Credential Reader
Green Emergency Break Glass
Electromagnetic Lock
Request to Exit Button

A typical system will either be a “Networked” solution whereby it is connected via an ethernet connection to a server for the use of some form of software. Or the system could be a “Standalone” system whereby there is no connection to a network, and they system operates independently through direct to door programming.

Access Control Features

Modern Access Control systems such as Paxton Net2 systems will typically be designed with a battery backup to ensure the system remains operational in the event of a power failure to ensure the protection of the building is not compromised. In addition to the battery backup, systems should be designed to incorporate a link to Fire Alarm system to override the door in the event of a fire alarm activation to ensure a smooth evacuation of the property.

Access Control systems offer real time monitoring for a premises and can allow staff to understand who is in/out of the property. With additional configuration and the use of IN/OUT readers, an accurate record of entry and exit times can be recorded and as such the system can then be utilised for Time and Attendance.

Many systems are scalable from 1 to 1,000 doors on a single “Networked” solution and up to 50,000 users across the system making the systems ideal for us across various industries. General Application

A wired Access Control system can be applied to all applications both heritage and commercial applications. While there are more limitations for use with heritage properties, protection can still be applied when sensibly designed. Commercial applications can be easily installed and configured to suit the customers exacting requirements.

Access Control system is designed in accordance with BS EN 60839 which is the primary standard for electronic access control systems defining the requirements for design, installation and ongoing maintenance.

In addition, a designer should consider BS 7273 and BS 5839 which consider the requirements for releasing the doors in a fire event, and BS 7671 considers the safe wiring of the system.
